FIRST AID FOR GOREANS/HERBS / POTIONS/ USES

Gorean First Aid



You need to have the basic knowledge of first aid in the case of raids. You will need to know how to care for the Free in case one is injured, or a sister is injured.

If the Masters of the room go on a raid, you will prepare the following for their return. If the First girl or second Girl is present they will tell you which Warrior you will attend to upon once the raid is over. You will attend to the Warrior that you are assigned.

All kajiri remember YOU ARE NOT HEALERS. If an injury requires more than simple treatment i.e. what you have been taught, control the damages as best you can and scream for help. DO NOT attempt to improvise with medicine, stick to what you KNOW and leave the rest to those who know more

If the room is being raided, once being released from the cage you will go to the cabinet in the servery and pick up a medical kit. If the Masters have gone to another room you will get the medical kits and place them on the furs awaiting their return. Also you will place a clean bowl of water with several rep cloths and…a bota of paga.

You will find the following in every kit:

scissors, scalpels, tweezers, cauterizing irons, pliers, trocars (ice pick), chest tubes

various sized bosk and tabuk pre threaded needles (the needles are splintered off from the shoulder bone of the beasts)

reels of both silk thread and disolvable gut

small soft pads of boiled rence cloth

bottles of poison antidotes

cleaned boiled rence cloth

soft cotton pads

a tin of willowbark

a pot of numbing salve (Tessa powder and lard)

a pot of healing salve(green herbal salve)

a pot of soothing salve (peppermint salve for pulled muscles...strains etc))

a pot of antiseptic green herbal mix powder

a bota of paga

a bowl

verr skin bags (for cold and hot compresses)

Tassa Powder

Medium sized jar of double-strength kanda salve

Medium sized jar of single-strength kanda-marigold salve9used for dirtier wounds)

Ten rolls of rep-gauze.

All wounds on Gor heal quickly and Goreans are very rarely ill Bones can heal as fast as 3 days
Tendons in as fast as 2 days
Bruises in as little as 1 day

All stitches should be checked and cleaned daily and removed after one day

HEAT increases circulation. The application of heat to a still bleeding injury causes the blood vessels in that area to 'dilate' i.e. open. This will increase bleeding. Heat in NEVER applied to an fresh injury, note it is applied for example on a 'sore gut' if one suspects internal bleeding from a blow or a blunt trauma of any kind.

COLD decreases circulation. This is a Palace girls! We have ICE! Use it. The application of ice will have the opposite effect on the blood vessels of the affected area than heat would. It closes up the vessels to 'constrict'. This is why ice is recommended on fresh injuries, it will help control bleeding. If using ice, remember not to apply directly onto the skin, wrap in a cloth. You will ice in the back room of th cooler both chipped and blocked

Blood flow is subject to GRAVITY. In other words, a bleeding hand will likely bleed less if it is raised higher than the organ pumping the blood (aka the heart) It also means that it is best to treat a warrior lying down or reclined back than standing. It also means that when they turn light green and clammy, holding the feet up will help. You see, the feet and hands are NOT vital organs... if the bleeding has been significant enough to affect total volume, you need to make sure the main organs (brain/heart/kidneys etc.) get as much of the flow as possible.


The steps of a basic medical serve

assist the P/patient to the furs ( if the Masters are returning from another place, make sure you are at the door waiting.

ask the Free of their wounds. prioritize them as to which need attention paid to them first.

offer some raw willow bark for the P/patient to chew on or ask the Free if they would like a kanda leaf to

relieve the pain. if the answer is yes, instruct them to chew the leaf but not swallow it as it is considered poisonous to do so

remove or cut away any leathers or clothing around the wounds

apply kanda salve if you have to stitch

if anything foreign is in the wound remove it with tweezers

if there is active bleeding apply pressure to slow it.

if it needs stitching thread the needle with the bosk or verr gut. tie off each stitch as you go to prevent puckering of the skin as a single, long row of continual stitches would cause the skin to pucker and prevent infection from seeping out, thus holding it in causing further problems later on. use the small pair of scissors in the med kit to cut each suture.

flush the area once more with clean water, pat dry with a clean cloth

be very descriptive and list each and every step to ensure the healing will occur

the next day, make sure to check on the P/patient, change the dressing on any wound, check for infection

apply a thick coat of the healing salve place a clean, soft pad of bandaging over the wound and wrap a length of rolled bandage around the area where the wound is located to hold it in place, tie off

kisses and tenderness are important but keep the task in mind

Stitching

wash the wound thoroughly with sterile water

apply green paga mixture as an anesthetic/disinfectant

slaves should receive permission to pull free any knives, quivas or arrows remaining in the wound; careful to check if anything is embedded near major blood vessels; use a soft cloth for pressure if bleeding continues; use the scalpels and tweezers, sterilized in a flame for a few seconds to ensure there are no smaller objects left in any wounds

smooth numbing salve to the wound edges

suture deep wounds and tendons with strong stitches followed by mattress stitches to brace the incision line

suture surface wounds with herringbone stitches and a finer gut.. making small, even stitches to make a smooth line

keep stitches closer together.. pulling thread tightly .. tying off at the end of each stitch and knotting thread

sprinkle green antiseptic healing power, layer wound with healing slaves

wrap with fresh bandages and a soft pad for deep wounds.. and leaving surface wounds either uncovered or wrapped in a light

Drugs

Agrimony is an antibiotic salve

Bergament salve is used for itching and rashes

Brak bush is a shrub whose leaves have a pergatory effect when chewed

Capture Scent will render a person unconscious when inhaled. Can also be used in a dart.

Healing salve a gift of the Priest Kings. When applyed it will heal a cut in a few minutes.

Honey is applied to wounds to help promote healing

Green herbal powder is used to clean wounds when mixed with water. Can also be sprinkled into a clean wound.

Ka la na root is steeped in water and used to cleanse wounds.

Kur fat is used to stop infections

Matchweed is an anti-coagulant Mudpacks are placed on a sprained ankle to help with swelling and pain

Numbing salve (dried ground kanda leaves in lard)

Sleeping Powder it is an amber powder - add water and shake, turns a dark blue

Tassa powder when mixed with ka la na, it will render the patient unconscious, it is a reddish powder

Tubers are used to make packs to stop external bleeding by drying them, then crushing them, mixing them with water to form the pack

White Sage is used to help fight off infections

Wylow, parts of this tree are used for pain relief, the bark is chewed, while the leaves and buds are brewed as a tea Yellow powder is concentrated brak brush. Used as a laxative, causes diarrhea.

Zingiber is used for nausea

Bruises, sprains and strains

Apply a cool mud pack to the area. In the case of a sprained wrist, ankle etc the mud pack can be held in place by bandaging.

Simple cuts and punctures

These are easily dealt with by the obvious cleaning and bandaging of the wound. If a girl reads the lists of drugs, she will see that she has many choices for salves and powders to fight infection and to kill pain. (A note on pain relief: Kanda leaf is a toxic narcotic. There are many more alternatives to this for pain relief.) Slaves of Ko ro ba will offer wylow as the first choice for numbing pain. If kanda leaf is specifically requested, it may be given.

Wash the wound with green herbal powder mixed with water or ka lana root steeped in water in a bowl. Use a clean rep cloth to wash it. For deep punctures or cuts pour directly onto the wound. Smooth numbing salve to the wound edges. Bandage with rep cloth bandage.

Serious cuts and punctures

This an area in which a slave must do the main life saving steps and then get the help of a physician. If not bleeding badly, do the above steps but call for the help of a healer to treat the wound. Often you will find that there is arterial bleeding. This is when a girl must move fast.

The first step is to stop the bleeding. This is accomplished by means of direct pressure or in a worse case scenerio with a tourniquet. The tourniquet should only be used if the patient isn't able to, or if another bystander isn't around to hold direct pressure on the wound while you go for help. Do not pull out arrows or other barbed weapons. A slave may remove knives etc. by grasping them in a cloth and laying them beside the Master. Do not cauterise wounds. this invites infection.

Don'ts of bleeding wounds
Don't pull the bandage off once you have a bad cut stoped bleeding.
Don't pull out barbed weapons.
Don't cauterize a wound.

Shock

can be fatal if not treated and is often overlooked by the inexperienced. Trauma, whether it's cuts, burns, poison, allergic reaction or exposure, can induce shock. A girl should have the patient lay down, keep Him calm, elevate the legs slightly, except in the case of a head wound. Loosen any restrictive clothing. Remember the main goal is to increase the blood flow to the primary organs, in particular the brain. Keep Him warm but do not allow to over heat. The patient can have as much water He wants to drink...but remember the main thing is to keep Him calm. Don't force Him to drink.

Signs of shock include:

pale clammy skin
rapid heart rate
low blood pressure
decreased alertness
confusion

Don'ts of shock
Don't over heat the patient.
Don't let the patient become aggitated, keep Him calm.

Broken bones

Types of breaks:
Incomplete: The break doesn't go through the whole bone.
Complete: The bone is broken all the way through but still in contact.
Simple fracture: The break goes all the way through the bone. The bone is separated but held together by muscle and skin.
Compound fracture: The bone has penetrated the skin.

Broken bones need to be handled by a healer. NEVER try to reset the bone yourself. The only thing a girl need do is to immobilize the limb or body area. On an extremity a simple splint will work. This kind of situation is a perfect example of where shock can set in without the girl realizing the problem. When splinting a limb be sure to use ample padding before applying the splints.

Burns

Types of burns
First degree burns The outer layer of skin is burned. It will be red and painful.
Second degree burns Deeper burns, into the second layer of tissue.
Third degree burns Can be extremely deep, doing damage to muscle and tendon.

Burns need to be kept clean and bandaged. Gently bathe the burn in clean cool water, change dressing often. Infection is a major concern of burn victims. Again burns are an area that shock is very likely. Watch the patient closely and treat for it.

Pregnancy~~slave wine is given to a slave by her Master to prevent pregnancy~~

Punctured Lungs~~use the trocar (ice pick) to make a hole; using the chest tube, insert between ribs on side of injured lung~~

Rashes~~bergament salves stop the itching~~

Aging: stabilization serum is made available to A/all; provides protection against most diseases and ailments; slows the aging process

Anti Serum: : given to those bit by sleen to counteract sleen poisons.

Ant Bites: (( Ants of the Schendi have painful but nonleathal bites )) "Ants, some two hundred yards in advance of the column, approach the meat. Their antennae were lifted. They had seemed tense, excited. They were some two inches in length. Their bite, and that of their fellows, is vicious and extremely painful, but it is not poisonous."--Explorers of Gor pg. 401

Arro: Part Used : Aerial parts. Preparations & Doasage : Infusion: Pour a cup of boiling water onto 1-2 tsp of the dried herb and leave to infuse for 10-15 minutes. When feverish it should be drunk hourly. Tincture: take 2-4 ml fo the tinture 3 times Daily.

Bergament salve Used for itching and rashes.

Blood Transfusions: "I sprang to my feet and ran to the door. Flaminius! I cried. Flaminius! A slave running past stopped on my command. Fetch Flaminius! I cried. He must bring blood! Sura must live! The slave hurtled down the hall. Flaminius came in but a few moments. With him he carried the apparatus of his craft, and a cannister of fluid." ( Assassin of Gor pg. 380 )

Brak bush: A shrub whose leaves have a purgative effect when chewed.

Breeding wine: A sweet beverage which counteracts the effects of slave wine, making a slavegirl fertile; also called second wine.

Births/Infants: Cut the cord at birth from the baby. ( Mercenaries of Gor ). Talk about infant mortality. ( Tribesmen of Gor )

Feeding tubes and stomach pumps: ( Players of Gor )

Black pepper: It hurts but will stop bleeding.

Blue short grass: Grows under the water of the falls. When dried and crushed, it has numbing qualities. The powder aids in comfort and pain.

Capture scent:it will render a person unconscious when inhaled.

"She opened her eyes, and shook her head. What is this? she said. Capture scent, I said."..."Shall I hold again the vial beneath her nose? I asked. Soaked in a rag and scarf and held over the nose and mouth of a female it can render her unconscious in five Ihn. She squirmed wildly for an Ihn or two, and then sluggishly, and then falls limp. It is sometimes uesd by tarnsmen; it is often used by slavers. Anesthetic dart, too are sometimes used in the taking of female; these maybe flung, or entered into the body by hand; they take effect in about fourty Ihn; she awakens often, in a slave kennel." Cayenne Pepper: referred to as stinging spices...levels out blood pressure, when made as a tea helps to stop internal bleeding, when applied as a paste, stops external bleeding

Chamomilein: a tea to aid with sleep....especially during pregnancy . as a tea, helps with insomnia, anxiety, menopausal depression, loss of appetite, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, colic, aches and pains of flu, migraine, neuralgia, teething, vertigo, motion sickness, conjunctivitis, inflamed skin, urticaria etc.

Dried sunflower leaves:Crushed and smoked in a pipe. Help with a cold, and clears the head.

Emetics: Mix the powder with water, drink. --Dancers of Gor, pg 238. ( See Laxatives. )

Echinacea: one of the primary remedies for helping the body rid itself of microbial infections. It is often effective against both bacterial and viral attacks. Put 1-2 teaspoonfuls of the root in one cup of water and bring it slowly to boil. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes. Could be combined with myrrh.

Frobicain: "They seem very quiet," I observed.'We permit them," said Flaminius, deigning to offer a bit of explanation, "five Ahn of varied responses, depending on when they recover from the frobicain injection. Mostly this takes the form of hysterical weeping, threats, demands for explanation, screaming and such. They will also be allowed to express their distress for certain periods at stated times in the future."--Assassin of Gor, page 126.
"The man with the thief's scar again emerged from the ship, this time with a syringe. He injected a tiny bit of serum into each girl, entering the needle in the girls back, on the left side between the hip and backbone, passing the needle each time into a small vial he held in his left hand."..."They will not awaken now, said the man with the Thief's scar, for better than an Ahn."..."We began to go up to the third level. Garlic: one of the most effective anti-microbial plants available, acting on bacteria, viruses andalimentary parasites. The volatile oil is an effective agent and as it is largely excreted via the lungs, it is used in infections of this system such as chronic bronchitis, respiratory catarrh, recurrent colds and influenza. A clove should be eaten three times a day.

Gieron: A drug, an allergen, which causes a yellowing of the whites of the eyes; in combination with Sajel, it reproduces the symptoms of the Bazi plague. Non-infectious.

Healing Salve: (( Tarl Cabot and vika a slave speaking of an ointment )) "The ointment will soon be absorbed, she said. "In a few minutes there will be no trace of it nor of the cuts." The Physicians of Treve, I said, have marvelous medicines. It is an ointment of Preist Kings, she said."--Priest Kings of Gor pg 64

An ointment was brought, and he smeared it across the two cuts. It was odorless. To my surprise it seemed to be absorbed almost immediately. You must be careful, he said. Again I said nothing. You might have marked yourself, he said, or might have been blinded. He returned the ointment to another man. Hemp: Works like dopamine to increase a blood pressure.

Honey: Applied on a wound helps promote healing.

Hysteria:inject frobicain to dull the emotions

Indigestion: add peppermint to tea along with ginger

Infections: White sage, Peppermint and Kurfat all pull out an infection.

Injections: (support for/knowledge of) - Phlebotomy (drawing blood) and use of needles is found in Captive of Gor, pg 93-95, and Fighting Slaves of Gor. Insomnia: valerian powder in tea; add sleeping powder, an amber fluid to water and shake till a dark blue
Instant cellular disruption:Leads to immediate death. Rapid aging, leads to death in about a Hand.

Lavenia: Parts Used - Flowers Preparations & Doasage : Infusion: To take Internally, pour a cup of boiling water onto 1 tsp of the dried herb and leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Then 1-3ml to be taken by mouth for pain. The Blossoms may also be boiled in water to alleviate headaches.

Laxatives: (The use of medications to control the stomach and bowels of slaves) "Some girls I have been told sometimes try to swallow small coins but this is foolish. The coin can be produced swiftly enough in such cases by emetics and laxatives." --Dancer of Gor, pg 238.

Low Blood Pressure: hemp

Lyptus: Parts Used : Leaves and the oil distilled from them.
Preparations & Doasage : An infusion may be made with 1-2 tsp of the leaves to a cup of boiling water. Let infuse for 10-15 minutes. The dose of tincture is 1ml. 3 times a day.
Exernal Use : Put 5 drops of the oil in a hot bath or 6 drops in boiling water, put towel over head and inhale the vapors.

Marigold: a natural antibotic. It can be ground and used in healing salves, boiled to oils and used to irrigate high risk wounds to prevent infection, it can be ground and added to foods for the same effect.

Matchweed: An anitcoagulant.

Mud packs: Put around a sprain to help with pain and swelling.

Mul-Pellets: A pellet given to the Muls *slaves* which supplement their meal intake. "...the Mul-Pellets are undoubtedly some type of dietary supplement..."
Nausea: herbal teas with zinigber or peppermint or chamomile

Ost bites: Immediate death. Its venom is a neurotoxin, there is NO anecdote. Massive tissue necrosis meantioned in Outlaws and Assassins

Plantion Leaves: this is found growing wild. It draws out infection, halts bleeding, and eases burns.

Rashes: bergament salves stop the itching

Sajel: A drug which causes harmless pustules to erupt on the body; in combination with Gieron, it reproduces the symptoms of the Bazi plague. Non-infectious. (See Gieron for more description, quote)

Salt Deprivation: "In the last days we had been denied salt. Our bodies were cruel with cramps and weakness. "--Tribesmen of Gor pg. 236

Shock: Common symptoms include - Pale, sweaty, or clammy skin. A drop in blood pressure and elevated pulse rate. Rapid, shallow respirations.
"Sometimes, said Flaminius... shock cannot be so easliy prevented. Indeed sometimes the lash itself drives the girl into shock. Then sedations and drugs are called for." --Assassin of Gor, pg 128.

Sip root: A bitter root whose extract is the active ingredient in slave wine. Red Savages make their slaves chew as a means of birth control. ( Red Savage of Gor)

Slave wine: A black, bitter beverage that acts as a contraceptive; its effect is instantaneous and lasts for well over a month; can be counter-acted with a another, sweet-tasting beverage.

Sleeping powder: Amber fluid - add water and shake, turns a dark blue.

Sore Throats: lemon, honey, and ginger mixed with tea

Stabilization Serums: A series of medical injections which, among other things, retards the aging process; an invention of the Priest-Kings, approved by them for use by humans; administered in 4 injections.

Tassa powder: A reddish powder, usually mixed with red wine, which renders the consumer unconscious.

Teslik: A plant whose extract is the active ingredient in breeding wine.

Thyme: Parts Used: Leaves and flowering tops.
Preparations & Doasage: Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto 2 tsps of the dried herb and let infuse for 10 minutes. Tinture: take 2-4ml of the tincture 3 times a day.

Tranquilizers: "Stand quietly, the judge warned her, or you will be forced to drink a sedative."(Nomads of Gor pg.121)

Tubers: Grow in the falls. When dried, crushed and mixed with water, they make a good pack and aids in stopping external bleeding.

Valerian: Part Used : Phizome, Stolons and Roots. wide range of specific uses, but its main indications are: anxiety, nervous sleeplessness, and the bodily symptoms of tension such as muscle cramping or indigestion. It may be used safely in situations where tension and anxiety are causing problems. This may manifest in purely psychological and behavioral ways or also with body symptoms. Valerian will help in most cases. Preparations & Doasage : ( Very strong pain killer) 1 tsp of the dried herb and 1/2 cup water infuse for 10 min. This one is most widely used. Tincture 1/2 to 1 tsp is given and indeed up to 2 tsps at one time. (Note) This is a very strong Pain killer use it with care.

Willow: Parts Used: Bark, leaves and buds Preparations & Doasage: chewing of the bark. Tea's brewed from the leaves or inner bark serve as a pain killer

Yellow powder: Concentrated brak brush. Used as a laxative, causes diarrhea.

Zingiber: Used for nausea.

Bazi plague: A deadly, rapidly spreading disease with no known cure; its symptoms include pustules which appear all over the body, and a yellowing of the whites of the eyes.
Dar-kosis: A virulent, horrible, wasting disease and is similar in many ways to leprosy. Dar-kosis means Holy Disease and it is also known as the Sacred Affliction. The diseased are commonly known as Afflicted Ones. The name of the disease is rarely mentioned. The Initiates feel Dar-kosis is an instrument of the Priest-Kings to punish those who displease them. The afflicted are holy to the Priest Kings and it is heresy to shed their blood though they can be stoned. It is highly contagious and the afflicted must wear yellow robes as a mark. Many victims also periodically clack a wooden device to warn people to stay away. Initiates have arranged Dar-Kosis pits where the Afflicted may voluntarily imprison themselves, to be fed with food dropped by men on tarns. Once in a Pit, an Afflicted is not permitted to leave.
Kosis: Means Disease.
The kanda plant was decribe in detail in the books. It is NOT in any way part of the healing of Gor. It is a lethal plant. The roots were used to poison the tips of knives, arrows etc. The leaves were chewed on but not swallowed as an addictive narcotic. There was no healing associated with this plant.

"It was a throwing knife, of a sort used in Ar, much smaller than the southern quiva, and tapered on only one side. It was a knife designed for killing. Mixed with the blood and fluids of the body there was a smear of white at the end of the steel, the softened residue of a glaze of kanda paste, now melted by body heat, which had coated the tip of the blade. Much more dangerous is the poison lock, because the opening through which the tiny pins, usually coated with a paste formed from kanda root, can emerge can be extremely small, almost invisible to the eye, easy to overlook in the crevices and grillwork of the commonly heavy, ornate Gorean lock. Kanda is a plant which grows in desert regions of Gor. It's roots are extremely toxic, even poisonous, but the leaves can be rolled and formed into strings which are chewed or sucked to produce a stimulant effect

Tobacco is unknown on Gor, though there are certain vices or habits to take its place, in particular the stimulation afforded by chewing on the leaves of the Kanda plant, the roots of which, oddly enough, when ground and dried, constitute an extremely deadly poison. Priest-Kings of Gor, page 25

The roots of the kanda plant, which grows largely in desert regions on Gor, are extremely toxic, but, surprisingly, the rolled leaves of this plant, which are relatively innocuous, are formed into strings and, chewed or sucked, are much favored by many Goreans, particularly in the southern hemisphere, where the leaf is more abundant. The Players are not a caste, nor a clan, but they tend to be a group apart, living their own lives. They are made up of men from various castes who often have little in common but the game, but that is more than enough. They are men who commonly have an extraordinary aptitude for the game but beyond this men who have become drunk on it, men lost in the subtle, abstract liquors of variation, pattern and victory, men who live for the game, who want it and need it as other men might want gold, or others power and women, or others the rolled, narcotic strings of toxic kanda. "He was now bent and crooked, like a broken blasted shrub in his yellow shroudlike robe. The hood concealed his face. Pointing to its shadowed concealed face it whispered "The Holy Disease." That was the literal translation of Dar Kosis 'the Holy Disease' or equivalent the Sacred Affliction. The disease is named that because it is regarded as being holy to the Priest Kings, and those who suffer from it are regarded as consecrated to the Priest Kings. Accordingly it is regarded as heresy to shed their blood. On the other hand, the Afflicted, as they are called, have little to fear from their fellow men. Their disease is so highly contagious, so invariably devastating in its effects, and so feared on the planet that even the boldest of outlaws gives them a wide berth. Accordingly, the afflicted enjoy a large amount of freedom of movement on Gor. They are of course, warned to stay away from the habitations of men, and if they approach too closely, they are sometimes stoned. Oddly enough, casuistically, stoning the Afflicted is not regarded as a violation of the Priest Kings supposed injunction against shedding their blood. As an act of charity, Initiates have arranged at various places Dar Kosis pits where the Afflicted may voluntarily imprison themselves to be fed with food hurled downward from the backs of passing tarns. Once in a Dar Kosis pit the Afflicted are not allowed to depart. I was glad that it was night and that the hood of the man was drawn, for I had no desire to look on what pieces of flesh might still cling to his skull." Tarnsman of Gor page 150-1

"I (Flaminius) and others worked secretly in the Cylinder of Physicians. We devoted our time, those ahn in the day in which we could work to study, research and experiment. Unfortunately for spite and for gold word of our work was brought the High Initiate, by a minor Physician discharged from our staff for incompetence. The Cylinder of Initiates demanded that the High Council of the Caste of Physicians put an end to our work, not only that it be discontinued but that our results to that date be destroyed.
